Worry is because the mind is in the future. And the future exists because there has been a past.. as in a past incident that has caused shame or guilt, and hence processed as worry. Worry is always about the future.
Suggest that each time you realise that you are worry, bring yourself/the mind to the present. You can either question the worry of the future, if it is necessary now; or simply start paying conscious attention to whatever that is around you. It is simply, heavenly... :)
For me, bringing the attention to the present doesn't really work, for it is through contemplation and understanding that fear and worry arise due to the nature of the mind to cling tightly to security and predictability. Sigh.... :)
Oh yes, wise Stella... to be mindful, or to be in the present, is simply not enough.. to bring in inquisitiveness in contemplation and understanding is helpful. The attitude and intention of contemplation to understanding is berry, berry important.. it determines the outcome. :)
I try my hardest to break free from worry but yet I still find myself worrying subconsciously.
